Calculating Foundation PercentageClick here to download the pedigree example.Does your horse qualify for Alliance registration? One of the most commonly asked questions by those who are considering membership with the Wisconsin Foundation Quarter Horse Association is "Does my horse qualify for foundation registration?" Hopefully, after reading this, you can determine if your horses will qualify. The first qualification for registration is that a horse be registered with the American Quarter Horse Association. This effectively rules out registered paints, appaloosas, arabians, etc. However, let's look at what else will automatically disqualify a horse for registration. If your horse has Impressive bloodlines he/she must be (N/N) HYPP. Also, if a registered Thoroughbred is in their second or third generations, they are not eligible. (Remember, your horse is considered the first generation, his parents are the second generation, his grandparents are the third and so on.) Now, if your horse has passed these first three tests, it's time to figure his foundation blood percentage. For registration, he or she must carry at least 75% foundation blood in his pedigree. Figuring this percentage is relatively simple if you have a pedigree with AQHA registration numbers for all of your horse's ancestors. You will also need to keep in mind that you are working with a total of 100%. If you come to a registered Thoroughbred or to an AQHA registration number of 27,000 or below, you can stop looking at that particular line of the pedigree. You only count the Thoroughbred blood one time. For example, your horse's great-grandsire is a registered Thoroughbred. You would only take 12.5% TB blood for this animal and not count any for his great-great-grandsire and great-great-granddam that produced this registered Thoroughbred. The 27,000 rule works this way. For example, your horse's grandsire's number is 24,355. At this point, you will stop tracing that particular line on the pedigree. It doesn't matter if he is by a registered Thoroughbred or not because the WIFQHA considers the first 27,000 horses registered with the AQHA to be foundation blood. Percentages by Generation:
